My Mac is very slow. Improve this question. After you've reinstalled ML, please report here on whether your machine feels faster. BTW, what Mac is it? Check your hardware too. Your hard disk may be failing.

That said, there's no reason it should do any of that, I've done this twice now and everything has gone as-expected.

If you are using the internet recovery route, it can take over an hour, depending on speed of internet etc. A bootable disk is also used to install a new operating system.
In this case, it boots a small program that is able to overwrite the existing OS or install the OS from scratch. The installation program on the bootable disk has complete control of the computer.
You might need to remove some startup programs, run updates on your system, or clean out your storage drive to fix this issue. But if none of these fixes have an effect, reinstalling macOS can likely help speed up your system. This is especially the case if your Mac is approaching a decade of life.
It does exactly what it says it does—reinstalls macOS itself. It only touches operating system files that are there in a default configuration, so any preference files, documents and applications that are either changed or not there in the default installer are simply left alone. Or does a reinstall of OSX delete the bootcamp as well? Keep holding the volume down button until you see the bootloader options. Purging files that you no longer need or migrating them onto another drive will help get you back up to speed quickly.
